The CEOS SDG-AHT was formally set up in November 2016 at the 30th CEOS Plenary, and was extended several times to continue the ongoing efforts to support GEO and others stakeholders progressing the Agenda using satellite imagery. At the 35th CEOS Plenary (2021), the team, which is temporary by nature, was disbanded.
However, we have demonstrated that CEOS activities on SDG were critical to GEO and other users communities, and decided to keep a small core SDG coordination group in CEOS (incl Systems Engineering Office (SEO), former and current SIT Chair teams, CEO). Its implementation will be led by the SEO. This will ensure the current work is delivered by exisiting CEOS expertise (technical reports for 4 sub-indicators), provide a strategic direction, and assess and coordinate any future external requests: this federated approach’ is described in our CEOS SDG Strategic implementation post 2021.
To highlight the potential role for Earth observations for supporting the global Indicator framework for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we, together with the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) put together the “Earth Observations in Support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” report.
A successful sustainable development agenda will require effective partnerships for implementation. This report describes how GEO and CEOS Agencies will work with governments, academia, scientists, and the private sector to develop such partnerships for implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
