Best Practice Documentation
Sharing our collective lessons learned and best practices has incredible potential to enhance and improve our capacity building efforts from agency to agency and country to country. In support of the broader capacity building and training activities led/organized by the other CEOS Working Groups and Virtual Constellations, we draw upon our collective training and capacity building experiences to develop best practices for both in-person and online training programs. As we continue identifying ways to make capacity building more efficient and effective, this document will evolve.

CEOS-Branded Webinar Toolkit
In support of the CEOS mission and goals, WGCapD aims to raise awareness of the value of Earth observation data products and services and to help user communities access data, products, and tools and effectively apply those data to solve real-world problems. Our Working Group members possess a wealth of knowledge and experience conducting trainings and capacity building activities, which we seek to offer as a resource to CEOS working teams that undertake their own capacity building initiatives. The WGCapD’s collective experience in effectively designing and hosting webinars has been compiled in the following documentation to support the strengthening and branding of CEOS webinars. The CEOS webinar toolkit guides are intended to be living documents, for exchanging experiences and sharing knowledge.

The WGCapD has developed a training report template and accompanying spreadsheet for collecting information about training activities. This facilitates consistent reporting for improved monitoring and more effective communication about the working group’s activities for 2020 and into the future. The WGCapD also developed a post-training questionnaire for standardized trainee data collection to help understand and evaluate trainings conducted.

CEOS Analysis Ready Data: CEOS Analysis Ready Data for Land (CARD4L) are satellite data that have been processed to a minimum set of requirements and organized into a form that allows immediate analysis with a minimum of additional user effort and interoperability both through time and with other datasets.
CEOS Earth Observations Handbook – 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals: The CEOS Earth Observation Handbook presents the main capabilities of satellite Earth observations, their applications and a systematic overview of present and planned CEOS agency Earth observation satellite missions and their instruments.
CEOS International Directory Network (IDN): The IDN serves as a Gateway to the world of Earth Science data. It is an international effort developed to assist researchers in locating information on available datasets. The directory is sponsored as a service to the Earth science community.
GEOSS Portal: An online map-based user interface which allows users to discover and access Earth observation data and resources from different providers from all over the world.
GEO Capacity Development Working Group (CD-WG): The capacity building activities in GEO aims to assist developed and developing countries and regions in increasing their technical and human capacity to acquire, share, store, maintain and fully utilize Earth observation data and information in the decision-making process; demonstrate solutions, disseminate best practices showcasing the value of Earth observations and promote the engagement of institutional users worldwide.
NASA Applied Remote Sensing Training (ARSET): The program builds participant skills to acquire and use NASA satellite and model data for decision support. The program provides training via online webinars and in-person workshops. ARSET trainings are intended for policymakers, NGOs, and other applied science professionals seeking to incorporate NASA remote sensing into their daily activities. NASA Data Pathfinders: New to using NASA Earth science data? These pathfinders are designed to help guide you through the process of selecting data products and learning how to use them.
SERVIR-Amazonia Capacity Building Library: Implemented by the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), SERVIR-Amazonia addresses environment and development challenges across the Amazon Basin using geospatial technologies to building capacity in Brazil, Peru, and Colombia. The Library hosts a variety of trainings, papers, and other resources useful for capacity building efforts.
ESA Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs): ESA undertakes a wide range of activities in the field of Earth Observation education, training and capacity building. The aim of this website is to provide a single portal that supplies information about these activities, and enables access to resources produced in their framework.
EO College: This hub provides users to learn about Earth observations, take online courses, discover vast EO resources, read and write EO related articles, and discuss with the EO community.
Learning Center: Education & Training in Remote Sensing & Geospatial Technology: This Learning Center, hosted by the Brazilian National Institute of Space Research’s (INPE‘s) Earth Observation General Coordination, disseminates the educational and scientific contents generated as a result of collaboration with the WGCapD and others. Access learning materials from online and onsite capacity building initiatives: video classes, lectures, presentations, and tutorials in various subjects related to the use of Remote Sensing and Geospatial Technology.
Global Forest Observations Initiative (GFOI) Inventory of Activities Portal: The portal is a one-stop shop with easy-to-access information on more than 400 forest monitoring support in 70 developing countries across Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean. Users can search for information by country or region, by type of forest monitoring activities, and by donors. The GFOI Inventory of Activities will help governments and donors identify gaps, share resources, avoid overlaps and explore opportunities for new partnerships to better address the challenges countries face as they develop their National Forest Monitoring Systems.
Understanding Biomass: The Importance of Satellite-Derived Products and Global Collaboration: This webinar, hosted by the Earth Observation Australia Inc., supports the Earth observation community interested in learning about satellite-derived biomass measurements and resources.
Online Radar Interferometry Forum: To support collaboration between researchers, INRAE created an online forum on radar interferometry. This is a site where researchers can consult other colleagues, share information, help each other, and develop topics related to the field. The group welcomes others to share learning resources on this forum.
COMET Program: COMET supports education and training for the environmental sciences, delivering scientifically relevant and instructionally progressive products and services as well as international capacity development to improve rural and remote communication and collection of meteorological information in developing countries.
